Rogue River basics

The Wild Section of the Rogue runs about 35 miles from Grave Creek to Foster Bar, usually over three or four days, at roughly Class III+ to IV- (The Mountaineers). From May 15 to October 15 you need a permit from the lottery (or a cancellation from the BLM permit office), and the rest of the year permits are self-issued.

Most of the river is like this video: fun, readable rapids between long, beautiful stretches of canyon. The headliners are Rainie Falls, Mule Creek Canyon and Blossom Bar.

Simple rapids are where you get sharp

Easy rapids are the best place to practice ferries, pivots and clean, efficient strokes. Run them on purpose instead of drifting through, and the big ones get easier. My oars here are the Sawyer DyneLite XD MXS; see the MXS oar guide for the full breakdown.

Personal trip report: flows, wood and hazards change, and what worked for me that day isn't a rule for your boat or group. Check current conditions, scout, and boat within your training.
