Short answer: the MXS is Sawyer's fiberglass whitewater oar shaft, and the big choice is the blade. The DuraMax MXS (from $285) is the tough, budget-friendly pick. The DyneLite XD MXS ($475) is the stiffer, lighter, pro-level pick. Everything else is fine-tuning.
Step 1: Pick your oar
| DuraMax MXS Plain Oar | DyneLite XD MXS Oar | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | From $285 | $475 |
| Blade | DuraMax: fiberglass-reinforced polypropylene, 7" x 30" | Carbon fiber and ash with fiberglass, Dynel/Kevlar Pro-Tip; Narrow 6" x 30" or Wide 7" x 30" |
| Lengths | 8', 8'6", 9', 9'6", 10' | 9', 9'6", 10' |
| Colors | Powder Blue, Powder Pink, Sunburst Yellow | Black, Shockwave Green, X-Weave Blue |
| Breakdown | 2-piece or 3-piece, +$65 | Not listed |
| Grip | Standard 1 5/8" or small 1 1/2" | Standard 1 5/8" |
| Included | Rope wrap and rubber stop | Rope wrap and rubber stop |
Both use a 1 5/8" inside-diameter fiberglass shaft, a laminated fir barrel grip with a vinyl grip cover, and Sawyer's Tite-Set blade lock, which Sawyer describes as a fail-safe connection that won't rattle or jam.
Step 2: Spare blades
- DuraMax Oar Blade, $95: 7" x 30", about 3 lbs, outfitter-proven. Great as a spare.
- DyneLite Extra Duty Oar Blade, $250: Narrow or Wide, carbon and fiberglass over solid ash with a full Pro-Tip. Sawyer calls it extra stiff, extremely tough and light.
Both fit MXS and PoleCat shafts with a 1 5/8" standard or 1 3/4" large Tite-Set mount. Match the mount to your shaft.
Step 3: Add-ons worth weighing
| Add-on | Price | Why you'd want it |
|---|---|---|
| Oar Handle with 2.5 lb counterbalance | From $30 | Offsets blade weight in the oarlock so your arms work less |
| 6" Handle Extension | From $45 | A little more length at the handle; counterbalance optional |
| 14" Shaft Extension | $60 | Oars a bit short for a bigger boat or frame |
| Foam Grips (pair) | $10 | Comfort and fewer blisters on long days |
| Rope Wrap Kit | $25 | Rewrap where the shaft rides in the oarlock |
| Tite-Set Kit | $18 | Spare blade-lock buttons and the keychain tool |
| Cobra Oarlocks | From $75 | Oval opening adds 10–15° of vertical range; standard or long shank |
| Canyon Oarlock | From $90 | U-shaped opening for feathering and stand-up rowing; blunt tip |
| Oarlock Shim Kit | From $16 | Delrin bushings (1/2", 3/4", 1") to set oarlock height |
| Oar Snubber MXS | $125 | Oar stop, snub and leash in one; see my Oar Snubber guide |

How I'd build it
- First oar setup on a budget: DuraMax MXS, plus one spare DuraMax blade.
- Long days or multi-day trips: add counterbalanced handles. Your shoulders will thank you.
- Spare oar that stows easily: a 2 or 3-piece breakdown DuraMax MXS.
- Hard-charging or guiding: DyneLite XD MXS, Cobra oarlocks and Oar Snubbers.
Oar length depends on your boat and frame width, so tell me your setup and I'll help you dial it in. Sawyer builds these to order, and through SOLWYRX most ship in 2–8 weeks.
