Short answer: get the Guide Styk ($160) if you paddle recreationally a few times a month. Get the Guide Styk PRO ($190) if you guide, paddle hard every week, or you're tough on gear. They're the same paddle except the PRO adds a carbon Shockwave overwrap on the shaft for extra strength and stiffness.

What the PRO overwrap actually does
The PRO wraps the fiberglass shaft in a zigzag carbon Shockwave pattern. Sawyer says it adds strength and durability, plus stiffness and rebound for a more efficient stroke, without feeling harsh on your joints. The regular Guide Styk's fiberglass shaft flexes a little more under load, which takes some shock off your hands, wrists and shoulders.
Who should get which
- Guide Styk: recreational paddlers, R2 and paddle-raft crews, people building a quiver, anyone who wants a quality wood blade without paying for carbon.
- Guide Styk PRO: guides, outfitters, racers, heavy paddlers, and anyone who's broken a paddle before. If you're on the water most weekends, the extra $30 is cheap insurance.
Both have the hot dog grip, which lets you slide your hand and reposition fast during strokes and maneuvers. Both have the Pro-Tip, so the blade edge holds up to rocks and shallow launches.
Ordering and wait time
Sawyer builds these to order. I order them to your length, and through SOLWYRX most ship in 2–8 weeks. Not sure on length? Tell me your boat and where you sit, and I'll help you pick before it gets built.
Quick answers
Is the PRO heavier? No. Both are listed at an average of 32 oz.
Can I get a different grip or color? Both come with the white ash hot dog grip and a yellow shaft.
